Heatmaps

See where visitors click and how far they scroll on each page of a client's site.

Overview

The Heatmaps screen shows where visitors click and how far they scroll on a client's site, over the last 30 days. Open a client and choose Heatmaps.

Heatmap capture is off by default and is turned on per client. If it is off, the screen says so. Pages appear once capture is on and visitors click or scroll.

Read a heatmap

  1. Choose a Page. Each page shows its clicks and sessions.
  2. Choose a Mode:
    • Clicks: where visitors clicked. Hotter colors mean more clicks.
    • Scroll depth: how far down the page visitors got.
  3. Narrow it down with Layout (Mobile, Tablet or Desktop) and Source. Both list only the values that reached this page, with their session counts.

The heat is drawn on a recorded visit of the page, so it lines up with the real layout. The note under the heatmap says which visit was used. If there is no recording for the chosen layout, the heat is drawn on a blank page of that width.

Very long pages show their top part only, and a banner says how much is shown.

Clicked elements

Under the click map, a table groups clicks by the element that was clicked, with Clicks and Visitors for each. Only clicks from tracking snippet version 3.26 or later have element data. Older clicks have positions only.

Empty heatmaps

  • No clicks for this filter: try another layout or source.
  • No scroll measurements: scroll depth is saved when a visitor leaves the page, so a page can have clicks before it has scroll data.

For developers

See the Heatmaps API. Turn capture on with PUT /client/v1/settings/heatmaps.
